Father's Day Treasure

Josh, 19, and Kelli, 17, traveled to Riverside today to celebrate Father’s Day with their Dad. Secretly, after a week of “but it’s my vacation,” “Can you take me to the beach?” and “I need the car to meet friends at Frank’s Hookah Bar,”…

...the silence is feeling a lot like Mother's Day!

The Challenge

I challenged myself to write a 100-word entry.  (Ok, my crazy blog teacher did.)
Exactly. (That's all me!)
Editing 160 words to 130 was easy. 130 to 100 was heart-bracingly, disturbingly
difficult. (67 mins., a diet coke, 5 mins., "The Day After Tomorrow," 43 mins.)

Bollocks.

The Beach in 100 Words

Kayaking today with Kelli was fantastic!  On the drive down, I was slightly overbearing:  Do you have a towel?  Do you have sunscreen?  Do I need to remind you that the sun will fry your skin?  Despite my motherly worries, the day was flawless.  Returning home, I deposited my keys on the sideboard.

That’s when Kelli began snorting with laughter.

 “What?” I demanded.

“You’re face,” she hiccupped.

I hoped for the best as I headed to the bathroom mirror, but my trepidation was fully realized. A raccoon stared back at me; a ghostly sunglass imprint on my otherwise scarlet face.

June 7, 2011

As I dropped my daughter off at school this morning, she whisper-screamed, “Oh My God, only 2 more days 'til I'm a senior!” while closing the car door.  I drove away dreaming of lazy summer days, sleep-away camp, staying in bed until 9, lounging by the pool...

Then it occurred to me:  THAT WAS NOT GOING TO BE MY SUMMER!!

What happened to those summers??  When did summer become the perfect time to squeeze in and catch up with anything forgotten, put-off, and ignored during the rest of the year?  You know what I mean!  Dentist appointments; closet purging; yearly physicals complete with proof of pertussis vaccination.  Then add the pressure of senior summer: the common app, college tours, deadline charts, online health classes, drivers license, senior portraits, blah, blah, blah, need more money, blah, blah, blah, need more time, blah, blah, BLAH…

BREATHE.

First thing's first, I needed to figure out dinner.   I think I’ll keep it simple and just serve chicken nuggets.
